# Instagram OSINT in 2026: what still works

## What Instagram shows without an account
A public profile's metadata loads logged-out: display name, bio, follower and following counts, post count, profile picture. The post grid is client-rendered and Instagram interposes a sign-up prompt after the first interaction. Stories, Highlights, comments, likes and private accounts are not served to logged-out visitors. Instagram's robots.txt disallows all crawlers by default and names GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended explicitly.

## Tool verdicts (checked 9 September 2026)
- Instaloader: use it. Actively maintained (release 4.15.3, July 2026; last commit 6 September 2026). Downloads public posts and metadata; may require a throwaway session under rate limits.
- Osintgram: do not rely on it. Last commit 25 August 2025; requires your own Instagram credentials; open issues through August 2026 are login failures and tracebacks.
- Viewer sites: Picuki no longer serves Instagram content (pivoted to TikTok in 2025). Imginn returned a Cloudflare challenge and is reported intermittently down. Dumpor (dumpor.io) and Mollygram load; they proxy the public surface only.
- Aware Online Instagram search tool: a query builder for site: searches, useful, no bypass.
- Reverse image search (Google Lens, Yandex, TinEye): working, the best pivot from a profile picture.
- Wayback Machine: profile-page captures exist (instagram.com/instagram captured 20 January 2026 with counts rendered); post-level captures are rare.

## Account age and identity pivots
"About this account" (three-dot menu) shows a Date joined month and year for accounts that have the section. No lawful phone-number or email lookup exists; the password-reset screen only discloses a masked handle. The reliable pivot is the handle reused on other platforms.

## Deletion behaviour
A deleted post sits in the owner's Recently Deleted folder for 30 days (24 hours for an unarchived story) and is then permanently deleted. No third party can recover it afterwards; "deleted posts viewer" sites only show content they cached while monitoring an account. What survives is what left Instagram before deletion: embeds, screenshots, cross-posts, Wayback snapshots, and archives that captured the mention at publication.

## The Reddit trail
Reddit posts and comments mentioned Instagram 7.7 million times in 2025 and 8.0 million times in 2024 (THINKPOL archive, counted 9 September 2026).
