# WeChat OSINT: what an ID search returns, and what the open layer holds (2026) Last verified: 9 September 2026. WeChat has a closed layer (one-to-one chats, group chats, Moments, visible only to approved contacts) and an open layer (official accounts, 公众号, and the articles they publish, readable from a link and indexed by Sogou Weixin). ## WeChat or Weixin Tencent runs two services under one brand. Accounts registered with a mainland +86 number are Weixin accounts under Tencent's mainland terms. Everyone else is a WeChat user: WeChat's privacy policy names WeChat International Pte. Ltd. (Singapore) as operator, with servers in Singapore and Malaysia, or Hong Kong for Hong Kong and Macao users. The split decides which legal process reaches the data. ## WeChat ID search - Works only inside the app, by WeChat ID or bound phone number. - Returns a profile card (nickname, avatar, region, status) only if the target has left discovery on under Me > Settings > Privacy > Methods for Friending Me. "User not found" means not discoverable, not non-existent. - WeChat's help centre states the WeChat ID cannot be hidden from people who can already see the profile, so a captured ID is a durable identifier. - WeChat IDs are not indexed by Google; Moments are never visible without an accepted friendship. - People Nearby still exists in 2026 as a discovery feature; it is not a lookup. ## Official accounts and articles - Sogou Weixin (weixin.sogou.com) was live on 9 September 2026: keyword search for official accounts and articles, Chinese only, CAPTCHA after repeated queries, no API. - Deleted articles are common. China Digital Times' 404 Deleted Content Archive held 2,593 deleted pieces by end of June 2026, most from WeChat, with 30 added that month. - wechat-article-exporter (12,900 GitHub stars) stopped maintenance on 30 July 2026 after WeChat closed the interfaces it relied on; it only exported articles from an account you could log into. - Capture live articles yourself (PDF, screenshot, WARC) and check the Wayback Machine for mp.weixin.qq.com URLs. ## Tool verdicts (9 September 2026) - WeChat app search: use it; the only ID lookup that exists. - Sogou Weixin: use it; working, manual only. - Wayback Machine: partial; check every 404. - wechat-article-exporter: dead since 30 July 2026. - OSINT Industries: partial; phone-number pivot, does not open Moments. - Face-search services listing WeChat: decline for casework; unverifiable coverage, biometric processing without an EU legal basis. ## Can WeChat be traced Only by the operator under legal process (court order, subpoena, legal request per WeChat International's policy; mainland law for Weixin). No outside party can trace an account to a device or location from the platform. ## The WeChat trail on Reddit In THINKPOL's archive, Reddit posts and comments mentioning WeChat numbered 91,000 in 2025, 62,000 in 2024 and 105,000 in 2020 (peak). IDs appear in flatmate ads, seller listings, agent adverts and scam warnings, many since deleted from live Reddit. Free search: https://think-pol.com/tools/reddit-search?q=wechat ; then https://think-pol.com/tools/reddit-user-lookup on the posting account. ## What THINKPOL adds today THINKPOL does not archive WeChat. It holds 30 billion Reddit posts and comments since 2005, captured at publication, including content later deleted or removed, searchable under 300 ms from EU infrastructure. For a WeChat case that is the open-web side of the trail: every time the ID, phone number or official account was named on Reddit, whether or not the post still exists.
