From ban to respawn: how a deleted Reddit community keeps streaming the World Cup

That post did not appear on r/soccerstreams. Reddit deleted that community in 2019. It appeared in one of the more than eighty subreddits that still carry its name, each a copy of a place that was supposed to be gone.

A ban treated as a takedown

In 2019, under legal pressure from the Premier League, Reddit banned r/soccerstreams, then the largest hub for pirated live sport on the platform. The removal was reported as a win for rights holders. For most tools, a banned subreddit is a closed case.

It was not closed. It fragmented.

The respawn network

The archive holds the aftermath. The single token soccerstreams appears 71,909 times across the data. Behind that number is a naming system: soccerstreams247, soccerstreams4K, soccerstreams404, soccerstreamslivehd, soccerstreams_Fans, and dozens more, each one created, removed, and rebuilt under a new suffix within hours of the last.

The subreddit is disposable by design. That is the point of it.

The content is built to survive keyword moderation. Titles are written in obfuscated unicode so automated filters miss them:

What sits on top of the free stream

Piracy is only the surface layer. On top of every free stream is a paid subscription being sold, and a scam impersonating both. One post asks the question the whole ecosystem runs on:

is soccerstreams.news legit or scam?

That question is the tell. The reseller handles, the IPTV subscription pitches, the Telegram and Discord funnels all live in these same threads, next to the free links that draw the audience in. When the subreddit is nuked, the whole funnel goes with it, and so does any record of who was running it.

The 2026 World Cup produced its own wave: worldcup2026game, worldcup2022livetv, and footballstreamstoday, spun up for a single tournament and abandoned after the final.

Why standard tools go dark here

Reveddit is gone. Pushshift is gone. When a moderator or Reddit removes one of these subreddits, the live web shows nothing. The investigator sees a banned page and a dead end. The operator sees an afternoon of downtime before the next suffix goes live.

The pattern is only visible if the deleted layer is preserved. Held against the archive, the respawn network stops looking like scattered spam and starts looking like what it is: one persistent operation, cycling through disposable communities, selling the same subscriptions to the same audience across every tournament.

The subreddit is disposable. The operator is not.

Methodology

This analysis used the THINKPOL archive of more than 30 billion posts and comments, via think-pol.com. The approach was a prefix search across the soccerstreams and worldcup community names, and a term search on soccerstreams across submissions, isolating communities that were removed and then rebuilt. The archive preserves posts and communities after Reddit removes them, which is what makes the respawn chain legible. It does not host or provide any stream, subscription, or file. The evidence here is the structure of the network, not its contents.
