Telegram search engine: which ones still find channels, groups and messages.
Telegram's own search matches channel names and little else. This page tests the external engines and bots that search public Telegram in 2026, says what each can and cannot see, and shows where the invite links come from in the first place.
Short answer
Which Telegram search engines actually work in 2026?
Last verified: 9 September 2026. Four external Telegram search engines answered normally on that date, one was down, and one only answers in a browser. Telegram's own global search covers public channels, but it ranks by subscriber count and only matches names, so it is the worst tool for finding a channel you do not already know about. The external engines exist to fix that, and they fall into two families.
The first family searches Google's copy of Telegram: Telegago is a custom Google search restricted to t.me and telegram.me, so it finds whatever Google has already crawled from public channel previews. The second family runs its own crawler and index: Telemetry, TGStat, Lyzem, telehunt and XTEA each keep a database of channels, and some of them keep the messages too. Only that second family can search inside posts, and only the ones that store history can show you a post the channel has since deleted.
A third route is not an engine at all: the in-app search bots (@ChatSearchRobot, @TgScanRobot and the group-finder bots) query their own directories from inside Telegram. They are convenient and they are opaque, and none of them explains where its index comes from.
Telegago, TGStat, Telemetry, Lyzem, telehunt, XTEA and the bots, tested
We queried each tool on 9 September 2026 without an account. The table records what each one indexes, whether it can search message text, and what it returned.

Telegago. Verdict: use it first. It costs nothing, needs no account, and because it is Google, it matches text inside posts that Google happened to crawl. Its ceiling is Google's crawl: new channels and anything Google skipped are invisible, and private groups never appear. The OSINT Newsletter, which maintains it, says so plainly in its documentation.
Telemetry. Verdict: the strongest index. It is the only tool in the set that advertises full-text search with AND, OR, wildcards and phrase match across billions of messages, with CSV export and an API. The free tier is limited and the page asks you to sign up to unlock full search. Because it stores copies of posts, it can still show a post after the channel removed it, but it does not promise that, and it holds public channels only.
TGStat. Verdict: a catalogue, not a search engine. It is excellent for the size, growth and reach of a channel you already found, especially in Russian-speaking Telegram, and thin for discovery by keyword. Most of the deeper views prompt you to sign in.
Lyzem. Verdict: good second opinion. A test query returned 1,150 results in 15 milliseconds with 25 channel links per page. Its index is smaller than Telemetry's and it has no history.
telehunt and XTEA. Verdict: do not rely on them. telehunt returned an HTTP 522 origin error at 08:37 UTC on the test date. XTEA still loads but its project blog has not moved since January 2020.
How do you search Telegram channels and groups without a bot?
Start with Google, restricted to Telegram: a search for site:t.me "your keyword" is exactly what Telegago automates. Every public channel has a web preview at t.me/s/channelname that renders the last posts without an account, and Google indexes those previews. Groups are harder, because most groups have no public preview, so what you find is the invite link someone posted elsewhere.
Then widen to the crawler engines above, and finish inside Telegram itself: its global search finds public channels by name, and the channel's own "similar channels" panel and forwarded-from labels walk you to neighbours. Forwards are the oldest discovery trick on the platform: a channel's content reveals which channels it reposts, and those reveal the next ring.
Can a search engine find messages inside a Telegram channel?
Yes for public channels, no for groups and private chats. A public channel's posts are served on the open web through the t.me/s preview, which is why Google, Telegago and the crawler engines can read them. Group messages are not published anywhere, so no engine indexes them; the only copies are inside the group and in whatever members exported. Secret chats are end-to-end encrypted and never touch Telegram's cloud at all.
The practical consequence for an investigator: a "Telegram message search" is a search of public broadcast channels. For a group you need membership, an admin's export, or a forwarded copy that landed in a public channel.
What TGStat does not do, and what an alternative needs
Searches for a "TGStat alternative" are small but the reasons behind them are consistent. TGStat is an analytics catalogue: it tells you a channel's subscriber curve, reach and citations, and it is strongest for Russian-language Telegram. It does not search inside posts across the platform, it does not keep the text of posts that were deleted, and its most useful screens sit behind an account.
An alternative for investigative work therefore needs three things TGStat lacks: full-text search over messages, retention of what was posted even after the channel edits or deletes it, and a stated jurisdiction for the data. Telemetry covers the first and part of the second. None of the tools on this page states where your queries are processed, which rules all of them out for teams that must answer that question in writing.
The Telegram trail that lives on Reddit
Every Telegram search engine indexes Telegram. The invite links are published somewhere else first. Reddit posts and comments mentioning Telegram in THINKPOL's archive peaked at 14.1 million in 2024 and stand at 5.2 million for 2026 to date, and a large share of them carry a t.me link. On 9 September 2026, most of the fifty most recent Reddit comments containing "t.me/" were AutoModerator boilerplate pointing members to a community's Telegram group, including "backup" channels for NSFW and piracy subreddits.
That matters because when Reddit bans a community, its off-platform migration path is already in the archive, in posts the live site no longer shows. What THINKPOL adds today

Telegram search, answered.
Yes. Telegram's global search finds public channels by name, and external engines such as Telegago, Telemetry, TGStat and Lyzem search channel names and, for some of them, the text of posts. Private channels and groups do not appear in any of them.
For free keyword discovery, Telegago, a Google custom search over t.me. For full-text search inside posts with operators and export, Telemetry, which self-reports 1.23 million public channels and 4.11 billion messages. TGStat is better read as an analytics catalogue.
A hidden or private channel has no public preview, so search engines cannot index it. It surfaces only through an invite link someone posted elsewhere, for example on Reddit, where THINKPOL's archive holds such links even after the original post was deleted.
There are private channels, which need an invite link, and secret chats, which are one-to-one, end-to-end encrypted and stored only on the two devices. Neither is searchable from outside, and secret chats leave nothing on Telegram's servers.
@ChatSearchRobot and @TgScanRobot are the most cited in-app search bots and both responded on 9 September 2026. They query their own directories and do not disclose their sources, so treat them as a convenience and confirm anything important with an external engine.
TGStat is a long-running Russian-origin analytics catalogue with a public English site. Browsing it is like browsing any directory; the caution is about what you connect to it, since deeper features ask you to sign in with a Telegram account.
Inside the app, Archive is a folder that hides chats from the main list without deleting anything. It is not a historical record of channel content. For that you need an external index that stored the posts, or your own export from Telegram Desktop.
Only an engine that stored a copy before the deletion can, and only for public channels. Telemetry keeps copies of indexed posts; Google-based search and catalogues such as TGStat do not. Group and private messages are never indexed at all.
